“I Wish You 10,000 Camels”: On Visiting Marrakech

May
30

I’ve been meaning to write this post up for a really long time but, obviously, life just kept getting in the way. So apologies, I know I’ve been promising it for a while!

Back in March, when the weather was still cold and dreary in London, I hopped over to Marrakech for a few days with my “sort-of cousin” Allison who had just turned 21 and was taking a little holiday around Europe to celebrate. I wasn’t supposed to go with her but last minute her friend had to drop out and so I slipped into her place – rather happily, I might add! The trip was lovely, it was wonderful to spend some time with Allison who was heading back to the States shortly (she was only in London to study for a semester) and Marrakech itself was great fun… but three days was enough!

You see, as beautiful as it was, there were times when Allison and I were downright terrified to be two young ladies in a foreign country by ourselves. Allison’s French is non-existent and my French is only at GCSE level and hidden beneath years of Spanish (a language I have always found to be much more intuitive), which meant that we were mostly relying on me to fumble my way through misconjugated verbs and wild gestures. By day three I was managing to communicate – my proudest moment was having a conversation with a stall vendor in the souks about traditional Moroccan sweets and where I could find them – but there were times when we thought we were going to either be run over by the ridiculous traffic or mugged down a dark alleyway by gangs of children.

So here’s my guide to Marrakech – we really only scratched the surface and if I were ever to return I’d probably want to go with a male companion, not ever by myself or with another girl.

Ain’t No Sunshine When I’m Gone

Jan

It’s my last day in Australia and I have nommed and munched my way from here to Melbourne and back again. Sorry for the total lack of blog posts since I arrived, I’ve been enjoying the sunshine far too much! Tomorrow morning I’m heading to Vancouver for a week (joy: 16 hour flight!), then into Amurika, from the West to East Coasts and seeing many of you very soon! Exciting, eh?

So, enough natter, here’s what’s been going on in my fave format: photos! And a video! That’s down at the bottom. I’ve also got a few new articles coming soon for The Arbuturian (as soon as I finish writing them, that is!). In case you missed my last one on Snake Soup in Hong Kong, you can read it here.

Bye-Bye Hong Kong, G’day Sydney!

I’m in Sydney! It’s 10am and I’m looking out over a gloriously sunny view of the city. The Sydney Opera House is just to the right with tiny little ants making their slow way up the Sydney Harbour Bridge (I don’t think I’ll be doing the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk, but if you don’t have a problem with heights you should! Pretty pricey, though) and beyond that are a mass of buildings, their chrome and glass glinting in the morning sun.

Am I making you jealous? Because if I were you I’d totally be jealous.

Hong Kong, Take 2

As promised, another update from Hong Kong! This time, however, you don’t have to do much reading. Just looking at photos and, oh is that a video? Why yes! Yes it is! Brother gave me this awesome little portable camera for Christmas which is very travel friendly, so I’ve been doing a little filming today. So enough chatter, let’s have some visual material!

For anybody who is uncomfortable with graphic raw and cooked food images, there are a couple in this post, plus a small clip in the video – just so you know. You have been warned! And so on we go…

Hallo Hong Kong-Ah!

Frying an egg on the Teppanyaki hot plate at Matsubishi, Convention Plaza.

I bet it was seeming like you were never going to hear from me again, eh? Well you don’t get off that easily! As I write this I’m sitting in my grandmother’s apartment, looking out over Causeway Bay, I’ve just come back from a delicious Indonesian lunch with the wonderful Rita, SC and their 4-month-old baby Lil’ Marcus (who is totally adorable – I nearly took him home with me!) and though I’m feeling a little sleepy (Hong Kong will do that to you), I’ve been having an awesome week.

So what exactly have I been doing for the six days I’ve been in Hong Kong? Duh: eating, and oh how I’ve been eating. The thing about Hong Kong is that the choice of food is so eclectic: it’s not all about eating in the big name restaurants, or only eating Chinese food. There is so much choice because there are so many people, and everybody has a different background. Don’t limit yourself by eating only the HK Michelin starred food, or only the places that are “amazing” but barely anybody goes there: in other words, don’t be a food snob. Eat up! Eat up good! Sometimes the most amazing meals can be found tucked away in the nastiest, most ghetto neighbourhoods, where even as you eat your snake soup (more on that later) you’re convinced the triad are going to pop out from behind one of the cages of live snakes and kill you. Probably with a snake. Maybe with throwing stars. Or is that too ninja?

Instead of giving you a blow-by-blow account of every single thing, I’m just going to give you a foodie photo round-up. Having said that, I’m saving some stuff because have I mentioned I’m the newest food writer for London-based magazine The Arbuturian? Oh yeah. There are more people being subjected to my writing, photographs & ramblings about food. Follow along with my Food Odyssey at the magazine’s site, where tidbits from my best (and possibly worst) food experiences will be published. You can read the first installment here. The second is now live here.

So. Without further ado. I present to you: FOOD. All photos can be found in a larger format on my Flickr.

New Year! So long 2010, hello 2011! Keeping this as short as possible because I’m going to make it pretty photo heavy, but as most of you know I’m currently in Spain and have been enjoying a rather sunny and warm lead-up to the end of 2010. So, without further ado, here’s to 2011, Feeder Lady style – also at the end of the post the two winners of my give-away! Happy New Year, kids! Warning to the vegans & vegetarians: there are quite a few ‘graphic’ raw food photos that follow after the break!
