Project Food Blog Entry #3: Luxury Dinner Party – It’s A Mad ‘Mad Men’ World

Luxury 'Mad Men' Dinner Party Menu

Clearly I’m through to round 3 of Project Food Blog – THANK YOU. I’m overjoyed. For this round Foodbuzz asked us to plan and host a luxury dinner party for at least four.

So I have a confession. I’ve always wanted to be a 1950s/60s housewife. I know, it’s a bit weird, especially coming from a British-born Chinese (BBC) girl. Why would I want the constrictions? Am I mad? But it’s because I love the idea of the glamour. I love the clothes. I love the sophistication. I love the Martinis. So when I saw the words ‘Luxury Dinner Party’ all I saw was ‘Mad Men’. What better way to relax and kick-back with friends than with a throwback to times of total sophistication?

Project Food Blog Entry #2: The Classics – How To Cook As If You Know What You’re Doing

Tagine Baby

As you may have guessed by the title of this post I made it through to round 2 of Project Food Blog 2010! A huge, massive, enormous thanks to everyone who voted for me – was thrilled to bits! For challenge 2 we were told to have a go at an “ethnic classic dish from another culture” and see how well we could pull it off. So what did I pick? A Moroccan tagine dish.

Two of my girl friends went to Morocco when they were about 16 and came back raving about everything. They even talked with great fondness about having to bring their own toilet paper up and down mountains. But I’ve never been. When trying to decide what I should cook I asked myself, what would I never think to make? And the answer was a tagine, something I’ve never attempted or eaten very much – Middle-Eastern doesn’t feature heavily on my radar. In fact, it’s so far removed from what I normally do it may as well not exist. But that’s why I loved the idea: why not really have a go at something different?

Project Food Blog Entry #1: Ready, Set, Blog! – Why I Am A Feeder

Let them eat cake

As you may have noticed from the sudden widget that popped up over on the left-hand side of my blog there, I’m entered as a contestant into the Project Food Blog competition over at FoodBuzz, the first interactive food blogging competition. Contestants will be put through their paces through ten different challenges until they are whittled down to just one, and voting will be a combination of official judges and you, the public. Voting for this stage of the competition opens on Monday 20th, by the way, but I’ll post a link when we get there! If you click on my contestant banner you can read a little more about me, or you can learn more about the competition itself through the other links at the top of this post.

For the first challenge we’ve been asked to create a post that “defines you as a food blogger and makes it clear why you think you have what it takes to be the next food blog star”. In all honesty, I’ve been puzzling over this one for a couple of days now. I kept writing a post and then scrapping it because I find it kind of hard to say why I should be the person you vote for. Or what makes me better than any of the other incredibly accomplished Food Bloggers who are entered into this competition (all 2,000 of them; yeah, 2,000). So what is it that sets me apart from all the rest?

I Can Haz New Toyz?

So, as you may have noticed, I have a shiny new badge over on the right-hand side of my blog – yes, I am now a Foodbuzz Featured Publisher! Happy times! I’m just glad that I’ll be able to share my Feeder habits with you all with Foodbuzz behind me – I’m gon’ make you fat. Actually, one of my friends said that to me the other day – we went for a coffee and she said that if we lived together I would definitely make her put on a lot of weight because of my Feeder ways. I guess that’s a compliment to my cooking…

Anyway, Foodbuzz aside, you may have noticed that I have some new toys! There’s a fantastic cooks’ haven called Whisk where I often go to gaze upon their beautiful cookware and lust after items I can’t afford. However, thanks to the end of formalised education and my continued part-time job selling posh baby items (ooOOOooh, seriously though, you having a baby? I can hook you up with some badass stuff), I’m in the money and slowly but surely I’m working on building up my perfect kitchen.

Now I like gadgets just as much as any other aspiring Heston Blumenthall (but female. And with a much easier name to pronounce), but too many gadgets in your kitchen just screams hassle and mess to me. Sure, they may be fun to play with at first, but then you’ve gotta clean ’em up! And put ’em away! And deep down I am just far too lazy for all that hassle. And storage space?! Hello. However, the one thing I was severely lacking were measuring cups and measuring spoons. I KNOW. How does one bake without these vital items? With great deviation between recipe and product, that’s how. NO LONGER SHALL I HAVE MISSHAPEN BAKED GOODS, NO! Those inaccurately measured proportional ways are behind me! I mean, just LOOK at that beautiful set of measuring cups! Look! They’re red and gorgeous! And they come with a leveller! And they didn’t cost me an arm and a leg! I KNOW.
