Feng Sushi, Borough Market

Just a quickie post to tide you over whilst I’m still recovering from (what I have now discovered to be) an infection in my left parotid gland. That’s saliva gland to you and I ordinary folks. Thank you all so much for such lovely messages wishing me well, you’re the nicest people I’ve never met! Ha! Seriously though, really appreciated it. You can read more about my experience with the doctor’s surgery this morning over on my Life Blog, including some photos NOT of food but of people! Unheard of. Phew!

So the other week I took Jun (of The Great Brownie Disaster) out for dinner to cheer her up. The tenth flat she’d looked at to move into at the beginning of August had fallen through on her and she needed some food therapy. Since she currently works around London Bridge of course we had to go down to Borough Market. Bully for us, it was a Monday evening, market’s shut. But oh well, Feng Sushi has always been a nice experience! And we are all about the Japanese food. Unfortunately, this time the experience was somewhat tainted.

I’m Not Dead

Jul

So since I last posted I have been struck down with a mystery illness which affects (of all things) my jaw. Or at least one-side of my jaw. The left-side to be specific. It’s very swollen and painful at the moment, particularly when I either open my mouth or bite down, and as a result I cannot eat properly at the moment. I know, right? Lame.

Anyway, I’m off to the doctor’s tomorrow to hopefully find out what is going on with me and fix me (or else procure very strong painkillers to numb the ouchies), but just letting you know that I am alive and I will post food and recipes again soon. Sowwy. On the plus side, maybe I’ll lose some weight! Waheeey…

Peace and love,

Jax x

I know, this is a food blog and I should be posting about food, but y’know what? I’m going to take a moment away from food today to talk about my fave subject (apparently): me!

As you may have guessed from the above photo (of me pulling a ridiculous face) I’ve graduated! Yep, I am now the proud owner of a shiny bit of paper that declares that I am a holder of a BA Joint Honours in American & English Studies, classification 2:1. Bow-chicka-wow-wow.

Releasing My Inner Foodie Communist: Food For The People By The People #8

Jul

It’s entry #8 in my Foodie Competition, innit blud. BOOYAH. If you’re new here and you’re wondering, ‘foodie comp? What foodie comp?!’ then you should familiarise yourself with this page and get submitting! And if you’re a regular round these here parts then you should still re-read the rules and get submitting. Boom-diddly-boom.

So actually, before I give you this entry, I’d like to use this opportunity to give myself a little self-promotion. Unheard of, I know. When I went down to Soho to interview the Mooli’s boys last month, I took a few interior shots. The other day the lovely Mathew sent me an urgent request asking if I could send them those shots as they are being featured in the Metro, a nation-wide free publication, tomorrow. That means that my photos (along with, hopefully, my credit) are being featured in a nation-wide publication tomorrow. Can I get a ‘booyah beeatch’? So anyway, if you’re in London you should definitely pick a copy of the Metro tomorrow (Wednesday 21st). I’m actually going to be in Nottingham getting my Grad-u-a-ti-on (read that outloud, spelling it out; oh yeaaaah) but the boyfriend has promised me he’ll pick up a couple of copies. YOU SHOULD PICK UP COPIES TOO :D Okay, enough of that, now onto the meat (ha) of this post…

This particular entry is brought to us by Spammed over at Kudocities and is a lovely little summer-time dinner recipe. It’s also incredibly easy, requiring minimal effort with maximum flavour results. What is it? Easy Cajun chicken.

Oh I’m A Terrible Tease, I Am

You see those beautiful little muffins right there? Take it in. Take it all in. Imagine those melting in your mouth (because melt they certainly do). Now hear this: I’m not giving you this recipe.

“WHAT?! HOW CAN YOU TEMPT US LIKE THIS, JACKIE?!” I hear you cry (…in my head I hear this. In reality you’re probably thinking, ‘meh. Big freakin’ deal’). Well that’s because I’m holding back on this gem for the cookbook.

Releasing My Inner Foodie Communist: Food For The People By The People #7

Entry #7! I know it hasn’t been that long since I posted #6, but I’ve actually got some time to get some cooking done and I’ve got a slight backlog of recipes to get through, so here you go! Deets are here if you don’t already know, so get reading and submitting!

This entry is brought to us by the fabulous Keely, a great friend and all-round pretty wonderful person. And she’s Irish, dontchaknow. I do a terrible impression of her. I’m sure one of these days she’s going to snap and beat me mid-oy-dee-oy or something, but for now she tolerates it and laughs. For now…

Jun’s Tuna Pasta Salad

Jul
17

Super quick recipe post today as I’m working on a couple of other things right now and I’m pretty tired today, but just wanted to tell you about the tried-and-tested tuna pasta salad.

This is a recipe from my bestie Jun (of the Great Brownie Disaster), a dish she often makes for barbecues. I’ve made it several times since she taught me how to make it and it’s so yummy – people usually polish it off like nobody’s business. One summer I even survived on a diet of sweet tea and this pasta salad – that was a good summer. If you aren’t down with canned tuna then this isn’t a recipe for you, but if you can tolerate it, please, make away. I promise you won’t regret it.

Hello hello! Entry #6 is here! Deets can be found here so get reading and submitting!

This entry was actually submitted to me a while ago by the awesome My_Left_Foot over at Kudocities but because I don’t have a barbecue in the flat I couldn’t make it… that is until I realised that the boyfriend has one at his place! And hey, it aint really a BBQ if there isn’t a manly-man to burn… er, I mean cook the meat on the fire for you.

For some reason men love barbecues. I think it’s part of the primal instinct. Y’know. Man make fire, man cook meat, woman bring beer and make salad, grr, arr. In our case it was more like woman bring rather pleasant sweet red German wine for man to sip at delicately whilst making fire cook meat, and then tell man that man should’ve made salad since woman brought ingredients, but hey, who’s counting.

Not-Quite-Tartiflette

Jul

Today was just one of those days. Do you know what I’m talking about? One of those days when you really need to curl up into a ball and sleep for hours because everything you touch somehow turns to doggy-doo-doo. My colleague and I were both having one of those days at work and were wandering around in a daze, despite the multiple cups of coffee. I think it’s because the hot weather appears to have subsided momentarily, instead leaving us with a very stereotypically-grey-London-haze. What we really need is a good thunderstorm to clear the air – the humidity is somewhat ridiculous right now.

Instead of doing what any other intelligent person would do in such a state (make a quickie dinner and then sleep for hours), when I got home I decided that a good, rich, comforting dish was exactly what I needed to make me feel better. Cue the tartiflette. Or at least my version.

Stress Cooking

Jul
09

Tartelette, originally uploaded by jaxies.

As I’ve mentioned before I’m a bit of a stress cook, ie. I cook when I’m stressed and it makes me feel better. However, this is a slightly different method of stress cooking. This is cooking and being stressed out from the cooking. In this particular case I was told about an hour before three and a half guests were due to arrive for a dinner party (the half being the most adorable two-year-old you’ve ever seen who then spent the entire evening alternating between poking, prodding, pawing at, hugging and kissing me and yelling, “JAAAAACKIE!” every time I left the room) that I needed to come up with some kind of appetiser dish and make some potatoes to go with the main course. Oh heck.

To make things worse it was ridiculously hot, muggy and uncomfortable today, I had a very late night last night, and because I’m on antibiotics right now I was feeling very under the weather. Anyway, this is a little recipe I whipped up, prepared and then got Momma Lee to put into the oven so I could go and have a lie-down for a couple of hours. Despite that, these turned out very nicely.
